"My violin and me" by Maria

Here’s a photo of my orchestra one year ago:

I’ve been studying music since I’m 3 years old and I’ve been playing the violin for 11 years.

Right now I play my own concerts, I play in a orchestra as first violin and I have a Quartet group. At home, and when is school time, I normally study between one or two hours in a week, although I should study more, but I can’t with the exams and the other extra school activities. Right now, in summer time, I usually study every day but maximum half an hour, because every years the level and difficulty rise much and more.
When I was five or six years old, I knew I wanted to play the violin and now I think it’s one of my best decisions I’ve made in my life.

I love play the violin in exams time, because for a few minutes, you stop thinking of all the school work, and you just think if you’re playing the right melody and if the notes are in tone.  For example, the most exciting thing of playing in a orchestra is that after hours and hours of hard work, because in one day of a normal week the rehearsal can perfectly lasts two hours and a half, people in the concert day will applaud you and congratulate you, although they haven’t like it.

My favourite classical music player is Hilary Hahn and my favourite modern music player is David Garrett, one of the best violin players in the world.

You can find amazing videos of them on “youtube”.

An informal letter to a friend by Bernat

Hello Dwayne!

It’s nice to hear about you. You’d like to know a piece of information about an important festival in Catalonia, wouldn’t you? I’d be so glad to.

This festival is called “Carnaval” and takes place in every town in my country. It’s a special and important festival because of its eccentricity. This weird festival is based on dressing original and colorful costumes while having a walk around all over the town. But, don’t think it’s just a simple walk, there’s a huge competition to have the best costume! (the council decides which’s the best one).

Personally, I love this festival. I strongly believe it’s an amazing time to enjoy, laugh at yourself and meet new people. Since I was a three-year-old child I’ve been creating my costumes with my own hands, and it’s shown me the things you like the most are those who are done by yourself.

I’ll be enjoying this fantastic festival, again, in February. Why don’t you take a coat and a cheap plane ticket? :D

Looking forward to receiving your answer and seeing you soon!

Regards,

Bernat

Special Writing Task by Júlia - A report on how to improve the school

Recommendations to improve the appearance of the school

Introduction

The aim of this report is to provide recommendations for improving the language school where I attend, the Cambridge School.

Recommendations

I spoke with different students to know their opinions about what improvements to the general appearance of the school might be achieved, and most people who go to this language school thinks that these ideas should be taken in consideration by the director.

1. The entrance of the school must be warm and welcoming; more big and large, with beautiful decorations, the same as the classrooms, that they are not well-decorated. In addition, it should have lots of chairs and tables to wait for the class.

2. About the classrooms, I think they are good, but with lack space. This means that all students we should be close together with little mobility. So, would be perfect if the classrooms were bigger.

3. Also regarding classes, I think the chairs are not the most appropriate, sincethe small table that have, not give us much space to work comfortably. For this reason, would be good having better chairs and tables.

Conclusion

These are just some recommendations made by the students, but I think the most important is the idea that favours a better study, that is improving the chairs and tables of the classes.

The Spice Girls

Today in class we talked about the Spice Girls, who were of course a huge pop phenomenon from the late 1990s.  Here they are performing (well, miming!) their hit song "Who do you think you are?" at the Brit Awards ceremony in 1997.   If you want to sing along, you'll find the lyrics below... :-)

The race is on to get out of the bottom,
The top is high so your roots are forgotten,
Giving is good as long as you're getting,
What's driving you it's ambition and betting,
(I said-a) who do you think you are? (Do you think you are)
Some kind of superstar,
You have got to swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
who do you think you are?
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it,
show me how good you are,
Swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
who do you think you are?
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it,
show how good you are.

You're swelling out in the wrong direction,
you've got the bug, superstar you've been bitten,
Your trumpet's blowing for far too long,
playing the snake of the ladder, but you're wrong

I said who do you think you are?
(who do you think you are)
Some kind of superstar,
You have got to swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
who do you think you are?
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it,
show me how good you are,
Swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
who do you think you are?
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it,
show how good you are.

You have got to reach on up, never lose your soul,
You have got to reach on up, never lose control

I said who do you think you are?
(I said who)do u think you aree, (do u think you are)
Some kind of superstar,
You have got to swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
who do you think you are?
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it,
show how good you are,
Swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
who do you think you are?
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it,
show how good you are.

Swing it, shake it, move it, make it,
(who do you think you are?)
Trust it, use it, prove it, groove it
show how good you are,

(repeat verse five times)
